  • Week In Review Podcast Posted!

Greetings, Mr. & Ms. Internet! Welcome to This Tweet in History, the Week In Review, podcasting to you on tape delay from our North American Studios.

Here are your top stories for the week ending June 27, 2009:

World: DATELINE Europe, June 21, 1633: Galileo feels the earth moves; Inquisition finds heresy
    The Back-Story:
In Galileo Galilei’s “Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems,” the astronomer allegedly defended Copernicus’ far-fetched theory that the world was not the static center of the universe, but, rather, that it revolves around the sun. On the date in question, the Catholic church passed judgment, finding Galileo guilty of heresy. He was imprisioned, and his book banned.

Sport: DATELINE: Rhode Island, June 27, 1898: No joshing: Slocum completes three year world tour as a solo artist:
    The Back Story:
On April 24, 1895, 51-year-old Captain Joshua Slocum left Boston in a tiny ship, embarking on a solo sailing trip around the world. Captain Slocum docked in Newport, Rhode Island, some 3 years later, successfully completing his journey after logging 46,000 miles at sea.

Things that make you go Huh?: DATELINE: Germany, June 24, 1374: Bopped till they dropped: Cast of thousands dancing in the streets of Aachen
    The Back Story:
In an outbreak of Dancing Mania, thousands of ordinary people danced, screamed, and hallucinated in the streets of Aachen, Germany, until they collapsed, still writhing and twisting, to the ground. There is little consensus about what caused the mass-mania, some laying the cause to fungus-infected rye that resembled the drug LSD.

    This week’s birthdays:
    June 21: Philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre
    June 22: Gangster John Dillinger
June 23: Inventor of the printing press Johannes Gutenberg
    June 24: Boxer Jack Dempsey
    June 25: Author George Orwell
June 26: Inventor of baseball Abner Doubleday
And June 27: Deaf, Blind author, Helen Keller
